Buying a house in Swindon - What you need to know14th March 2013
Swindon is a thriving town in the county of Wiltshire. We have the pleasure of having one of our main offices based in Swindon, which has enabled us to acquire over 13 years of experience to date as a Swindon estate agent and letting agent. Here are the reasons why re recommend Swindon as a place to live or invest in.
Swindon is a superb location and with house prices still lower in Swindon than the surrounding area now is a great time to buy a home in Swindon.
Swindon has one of the highest average household incomes in the country and is one of the fastest growing towns in Europe with a current population of 180,000. The population has doubled in the last 50 years. Construction commenced in 2001 and still continues on Priory Vale, the third and final instalment in Swindon’s “Northern expansion” project which began with Abbey Meads and continued in St Andrew’s Ridge. A further 1400 homes are planned to be built over the next few years.
Located approximately halfway between Bristol and Reading it is a great location for commuters with the M4, junction 15, and Swindon train station with a direct service into London and Bristol. The A419 provides easy access to Cirencester and The M5 to the Midlands.
The development of the canal and rail network in the 1800s saw the rapid development of a thriving engineering and manufacturing industry that catapulted Swindon to one of the leading commercial centres in the country. And with 500 businesses generating over £3.5bn a year in Swindon, this position continues. Major employers include Honda, BMW group, Catalent, Tyco Electronics, Nationwide Building Society and Zurich Financial Services.
Other major employers include science research councils and pharmaceutical companies such as Canada’s Patheon and the US-based Cardinal Health, who have their UK divisions headquartered in the town. As well as British Computer Society, Castrol, WHSmiths, RWE nPower, Motorola and the head office of Alcatel-Lucent Technologies.
There are many local amenities including ‘The Designer Outlet Village’ an outdoor shopping mall for reduced priced goods. The Oasis leisure centre and County Ground are used to host major events. Lydiard Country Park is one of several public parks with its lake and woodland.
Only a few miles up the road you enter the charm of Cirencester and the Cotswold Hills and all it has to offer! Cotswold Water Park is the UKs largest marl lake system and offers a huge selection of water sports and adventure activities.
